What if she were your…

Every time some cishet bigoted man, hell bent on giving the entire demographic a bad name says something that can euphemistically be defined as a rape apology, the general reaction is to implore him to have decency by creating a scenario where the victim is someone close to him.

All people should reject this line of thinking. For one, it says women can only be defined in relation to the men in their life. It says that a survivor’s story of sexual assault is only legitimised by her having a man in her life. It says that men are incapable of being humane without a direct link to the victim.

ALL women deserve respect. ALL women deserve to have their stories heard. This “she’s someone’s sister/daughter/wife etc” line of thinking must be destroyed; it is not a radical idea to expect everyone to respect women as their own autonomous beings.
