When someone chooses to divulge being raped to you, it’s not for you to decide how they handle it. It is not for you to share with anyone. You are literally the scum of the Earth if you discuss someone’s rape as salacious gossip, especially if the person has chosen silence. Rape is a crime against a person’s entire being: their body, their psyche, their autonomy. To treat someone’s confidence in you as a conversation piece is atrocious.
You don’t need to validate your empathy card by sharing someone else’s story. It’s their right to decide how they want to share it. There’s strength to speaking out and confronting rapists, but the judicial system and public opinion court fail victims.
