I am Unpretty

“Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female’.” ― Erin McKean

I disagree with the use of the word ‘female’ because women are more than just their reproductive abilities, but I overall love this quote. I think women are capable of being more than “pretty” and expecting them to look a certain way to be accepted as capable is misogyny of the highest order. Moreover, this arbitrary scale of “attractiveness” perpetuates body dysmorphia, and as someone who suffered, and probably still suffers from it, my health cannot afford to have prettiness expected of me.
